 MEDA Programme

The eligible region of the programme constitutes of 11 countries, (Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, United Kingdom – Gibraltar, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and resulted from the merger of the Programmes INTERREG ARCHIMED and MEDOCC. In Thessaloniki one of the two Liaison Offices of the Programme will be hosted, under the competences of which comes the support of the candidate associates and End Beneficiaries from the candidate and potentially candidate countries participating in the Programme, to be integrated into the European Union.

The Strategic Objective of the programme is defined as being the:  

  • Enhancement of economy of the region, in order to ensure the development and employment for future generations. 

For the implementation of the Programme the following Priority Axes have been set:

  1. Enhancement of innovation capacities: The technological, financial and organizational capacities of the region of the Mediterranean must be fully exploited in order to ensure the highest level of competitiveness, development and enlargement for the years to come.
  2. Protection of the environment and promotion of sustainable territorial development: The region of the programme, due to its various geographical features, is subject to a large number of environmental pressures that threaten the biodiversity, marine habitats, water resources and cultural heritage.
  3. Improvement of mobility and territorial accessibility: Improvement of transfer connections to promote mobility and enhance territorial connections. Support of the connection of the remote areas with the rest of the society and more effective use of information and communication technologies for meeting the objective. 
  4. Promotion of a polycentric and integrated Mediterranean area: Strengthening the links between urban and agricultural regions and improvement governance in a number of issues that are important for development. These activities will contribute to the stimulation of competitiveness and will prevent the examination of territorial inequalities.
  5. Technical Assistance: Support of the entire management and the smooth implementation of the Programme.

The budget of the Programme which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) stands at 193.191.331 Euros.
